Eyes Ever To The Sky

I’m very pleased to welcome Katie French to my blog. She is a fantastic young adult author whose books I’ve enjoyed reading. I admire her work for her fresh concepts and fast paced plots that keep you turning the page. Hi, Katie. I’m delighted to have you here and glad that everyone will get to learn a bit about you and your books. So tell me about your new novel . . .

How did you get the idea for “Eyes Ever to the Sky”?

The inspiration for this book came as I was waxing philosophical about the paranormal romance genre. It seemed a lot of people were writing in it, but the content, characters and settings were staler than the bread crusts I find under my son’s bed. I love the idea of combining romance and science fiction, my two favorite things, but I wanted to do it in a very different way. The idea popped in my head for a modern day Superman/ Louise Lane story. It’s morphed into something a little different, but hopefully super hero fans and romance fans won’t be disappointed.

I love your male protagonist, Hugh :) Who is your favorite character in the book?

Thanks! I love Hugh, too, but I’d have to say Cece is my favorite character. I work with at-risk teens during my day job as a high school counselor. Cece is my tribute to the tenacious, but down-on-their-luck teens who come in and out of my office everyday. They are every bit as caring, tenderhearted and fierce as she is and they deserve to be honored for their strength in the midst of such adversity.

Readers of what other YA books would enjoy “Eyes Ever to the Sky”?

Readers who liked I am Number 4 would like this book, or even, heaven forbid, Twilight fans. I’m not afraid to say I loved Twilight when it first came out. Sadly, the sexy vampire troupe has been buried under a sparking tombstone, so many writers are now afraid to claim it as a comparable book. My book is a lot different than your typical paranormal romance, but readers of that genre should enjoy it because the elation of first love, coupled with the real horror of facing your deepest fears, are all there. Plus some kick-butt fight scenes.

You have another YA book called “The Breeders”, which one was more difficult to write?

The Breeders was harder to write because when I started it I was still a fledgling writer. I spent eighteen hard months on The Breeders taking it through at least a hundred drafts.  Eyes came easier. It is a little lighter, a little more fun and a little more character driven. I fell in love with my characters for Eyes and they basically wrote the story for me.

What are you working on right now?

I am working on a sequel for The Breeders. Wanna hear about it? Sure you do. The Believers (The Breeders Series, Book 2) They’ve escaped the Breeders, yet their journey has just begun.

On the road back home, Clay, Riley and her family are captured by a savage group of huge, but mutated men. Their destination: the Citadel run by the seemingly psychic religious prophet, the Messiah. Somehow he knows their secrets. He wants them to join his group of believers, but only if they’ll drink the baptismal water and swear allegiance.

But, there’s something wrong with the water. Something wrong with the people. If they can’t figure out what, they’ll become one of them and become a believer forever.

Katie, that sounds like a fitting, exciting continuation to The Breeders. I’m very glad you could be with us, and I wish you luck with all your titles.

Thanks for having me, Ingrid.
